Adult Catechesis is for those 18 and older who need to receive one or more of the Sacraments of Initiation. Classes are once a week and typically last a year, although the time can be extended. There are three paths for adults seeking to receive Sacraments of Initiation.
OCIA
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is for those unbaptized adults who desire to be fully initiated into the Catholic Faith by receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The individual goes through the process of Precatechumenate, Catechumenate, Enlightenment and Mystagogy, receiving all three sacraments at the Easter Vigil.
Full Communion
Those who have been validly Baptized in another Christian Church, are not baptized again if they desire to become Catholic. Baptized Christians, after formation in the Catholic Faith, make a public Profession of Faith and are received into Full Communion by the reception of the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Rite of Reception in the Cathedral.
Sacramental Prep.
Those adults who were Baptized Catholics as infants but then did not receive First Communion and/or Confirmation can also receive preparation classes to receive these sacraments and thus be fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. They recieve the Sacraments not at the Easter Vigil, but rather at the parish Confirmation and First Communion Masses.
Classes
Classes for OCIA, Full Communion, and Adult Sacramental Preparation are held every Wednesday from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Parish Hall. Clases run from August to May and are available in both English and Spanish. The preparation to receive the sacraments last 9 months and cannot be shortened.
